With more and more bold sustainability initiatives taking up the headlines, Unilever joins the fight against plastic waste and announces its brave pledge of only incorporating 100% post-consumer recycled plastic into its biggest brand, Dove by 2025.
The entire Dove brand can be found in 171 countries and for the production of its bottles, the brand uses almost two-thirds of all plastic used. Its efforts to only use recycled plastic will start with the North American and European markets for all its three lines: Dove, Dove Men+Care, and Baby Dove.
In 2017, Unilever has made an announcement stating that by 2025, its plastic packaging will become reusable, recyclable or compostable. However, the brand did not offer more information about how it plans to make things happen at that time. Now, Unilever’s goal for this initiative is that its Dove efforts will eliminate the use of 20,500 tons of single-use plastic per year.
The brand’s efforts for this initiative have already started with over 100 trials including Dove products and existing bottles and those that the brand is planning to replace them with. The company had to test whether or not there will be any leaks or lack of compatibility with the products’ formulas to make sure that the 100% post-consumer recycled plastic bottled did not break when dropped.
The beauty industry still lacks strict federal regulations and standards around sustainability. So, hopefully, Dove’s initiative could be setting a great precedent, inspiring retailers and smaller brands to follow its example in the future.
