Unilever and Alibaba have partnered to launch new recycling machines that featuring artificial intelligence
London-based consumer goods company Unilever has partnered with Alibaba, one of the world's largest e-commerce companies, to develop a line of AI-powered recycling machines. The project is part of the Waste Free World initiative, for which the two companies have pledged, and it marks a premiere in the recycling industry.
The state-of-the-art machines use artificial intelligence to identify plastic packaging and then sort it automatically based on a QR code.
The recycled plastic will then be used by Unilever in the manufacturing of new packaging.
To encourage sustainable recycling practices, people who use the machines will receive coupons and other rewards from Unilever and AliPay.
The machines will be installed in offices and community spaces in Shanghai and Hangzhou throughout the course of this year, and they could collect up to 500 tonnes of plastic.
The goal of Waste Free World is to reduce plastic use by 100,000 tonnes.
